Innovative modified atmosphere/modified humidity bulk packaging gains momentum in the US for boosting food service efficiency and sustainability.

Pharr, Texas-based Kaliroy Fresh LLC says it will officially launch a new patented peel-back shaker snacking tomato clamshell at the Southeast Produce Council’s Southern Exposure event in Orlando, Fla.

The new peel-back shaker is made from recycled PET, and its design is inspired by the structure of a greenhouse, the company said in a news release.

The design allows the clamshell to be shipped as a “commodity” pint clamshell without a new item set up, according to Kaliroy Fresh, and it features a consumer-friendly peel-back label with a shaker feature on the top.

The company aimed to address three key requirements: effective oxygen barrier properties, high shrinkage range, and optimal balance between mechanical and optical properties. By collaborating with ExxonMobil and Kuraray, Alico developed Termoflex +B barrier shrink bags, utilizing Exceed Tough+ m 0512, a Signature Polymers product, coupled with EVAL's unique orientable EVOH grades.

The collaboration resulted in significant achievements:

Traditional polyethylene coatings have previously compromised the recyclability of barrier-coated paper packaging, contaminating paper recycling streams and condemning the waste to landfill. While PLA coatings are considered industrially compostable, they also pose challenges in the recycling process.

All of M&S’ single and twin garlic baguettes are now available in FSC approved paper packaging, which it said can easily be recycled as paper at home.

M&S sells 4.3 million packs of its single garlic baguette packs every year.

The food business operators were earlier asked to exhaust all existing pre-printed packaging materials before September 1, 2024, however, after consulting with all stakeholders, FSSAI decided to extend the current deadline. The new deadline for FBOs is December 31, 2024.

Earlier, in June, FSSAI had ordered FBOs to do away with claims of 100% fruit juices in their advertisements and labels of reconstituted fruit juices with an immediate effect, as the authority found the claims to be misleading.
