Nestlé began introducing Smarties sharing block packed in recyclable paper in the UK last year.

Alexander von Maillot, Global Head of Confectionery at Nestlé, said: "Shifting Smarties packaging to recyclable paper is one of our key sustainable packaging initiatives in the confectionery category. It is a further step in realizing Nestlé's ambition to make all of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025 and to reduce its use of virgin plastics by one third in the same period."

According to the latest research the global food supply chain system is responsible for 26% of global greenhouse gas emissions; a third of all food is lost or wasted somewhere in the supply chain; fossil fuel-based materials need to be phased out; and significant improvements are needed to the way packaging is dealt with after use.

Research has shown retailers and consumers are wanting more sustainable packaging solutions when they make purchasing decisions. Moreover, the EU’s single use plastic (SUP) directive, which came into force on 3 July 2019, aims to reduce the impact of certain plastic products on the environment. This has caused large brands and manufacturers to re-evaluate their packaging strategies and seek out alternatives.

The bio-plastic products have been developed in partnership with Treetop Biopak who specialise in providing innovative compostable packaging solutions

The new range consists of:

•          C-SHRINK

Industrially compostable shrink film that’s ideal for packaging of vegetables, bakery, and other foodstuffs as well as bundling multi-packs and as a secondary wrap for packed goods.

•          C-STRETCH

Home compostable stretch or cling film made from bio-based renewable sources.

•          C-TAPE

As travel restrictions & social-distancing guidelines remain in place, many consumers are beginning to take beauty & hair care treatments into their own hands at home, in true DIY fashion. This currently ongoing shift occurring within hair & scalp care products is demonstrated by solutions that provide deep cleansing, protection, and overall re-invigoration of “quarantine hair”.
