US-based food products manufacturer Mars Wrigley has partnered with standardised labelling system provider How2Recycle to develop a more sustainable packaging option for its Orbit Gum.

The 30-piece Orbit Mega Pack features an outer plastic package that can be recycled in around 50% of recycling streams in the US, with more locations to be made available in future.

Intended for on-the-go durability, the product is available on shelves for purchase at retailers across the nation and offered in Peppermint and Spearmint flavours.

GSKCH has made the commitment that 100 per cent of its product packaging will be recyclable or reusable, where quality and safety permits, by 2025. Its sustainability initiatives support GSK’s commitment to achieve a net zero impact on climate and a positive impact on nature by 2030.

Albéa’s Greenleaf 2 laminate tube technology provides the same product protection as current tubes and enables the tubes to be recyclable wherever collection programmes exist and are active.

Created for Irish farm potato business Meade Farm Group, the packaging has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

The packaging is the result of close collaboration between the three companies over a period of two years.

It uses Mondi’s speciality kraft paper and biodegradable Sustainex coating, water-based ink and corn starch-based netting.

The bag is designed to maintain strength when handling while providing barrier properties to keep the produce fresh. It has so far been launched in Ireland, Poland, France and Germany.

With 70kg of plastics waste generated every year by each French person – half of which is packaging, according to the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Carrefour is keen to promote reusable packaging with a deposit system.

Loop products are available in two Parisian Carrefour shops and will be available in 10 shops by the end of the year. Based on the lessons learned from this pilot project, the initiative will be rolled out more widely in 2021.
