The employee-owned business utilised its team of in-house experts to produce the solution, which is being sold as “Flexi-Hex”. The sleeves are produced from 85% recycled paper and can, according to the company, be easily recycled after use.

The pinch top box ensures a completely plastic-free design by eliminating the need for tape while reportedly providing a safe and secure fastening. Used in conjunction, Kite says that these products provide excellent protection while minimising environmental impact.

Plastic food packaging adds to this issue; however, it also plays an important role in food quality, safety and reducing food waste. However, this isn’t an either/or proposition – we must ensure that our packaging contributes to the circular economy. Already, Kellogg has one of the smallest plastic packaging footprints among peer food companies2 and 76% of our packaging is recyclable globally. Most of our other packaging uses either recycled-content paperboard cartons or corrugate cardboard.

GSKCH has made the commitment that 100 per cent of its product packaging will be recyclable or reusable, where quality and safety permits, by 2025. Its sustainability initiatives support GSK’s commitment to achieve a net zero impact on climate and a positive impact on nature by 2030.

Albéa’s Greenleaf 2 laminate tube technology provides the same product protection as current tubes and enables the tubes to be recyclable wherever collection programmes exist and are active.

Created for Irish farm potato business Meade Farm Group, the packaging has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

The packaging is the result of close collaboration between the three companies over a period of two years.

It uses Mondi’s speciality kraft paper and biodegradable Sustainex coating, water-based ink and corn starch-based netting.

The bag is designed to maintain strength when handling while providing barrier properties to keep the produce fresh. It has so far been launched in Ireland, Poland, France and Germany.

Fry’s, which is part of the LiveKindly Collective of plant-based brands, has removed the plastic wrappers from seven of its main products, including its bestselling Chicken-Style Burgers, and other lines including its Chicken-Style Strips, Traditional Burgers and Sausage Rolls.

It means the South African brand’s range – which is sold in Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Ocado – will now be packaged straight into the brand’s fully recyclable cardboard boxes. The brand said the move would help it reduce plastic use by 1.5 tonnes per year.

The pouch will initially be available with Uncle Ben’s ready-to-heat wholegrain rice, which is soon to be re-branded as Ben’s Original.

The mono-PP material, unveiled in December, is built on Amcor’s AmLite HeatFlex recyclable film and will be its first application for microwavable food and the first in a stand-up pouch format.

Learnings about how the material runs through Mars’ supply chain will inform a wider rollout in the year ahead.
