Single-use consumer habits continue to pose a threat to the environment — particularly in the context of plastic packaging. According to the World Economic Forum, only 14% of plastic packaging is collected for recycling globally. Moreover, by 2050 the carbon footprint of plastics is expected to triple in size. Recognising this, companies are making a move towards sustainable packaging solutions. For instance, by 2030, L’Oréal Paris aims to reduce its carbon footprint by 50%.

The lid, which is made from fully recyclable dispersion barrier board, is suitable for use with both hot and cold beverages. It uses a novel technology developed by The Paper Lid Company that makes it possible to form the paperboard into the desired shape. The result is a one-piece lid that clicks firmly in place and offers performance that is comparable to that of a traditional plastic lid.

With the support of new technologies and intelligent pack design, Wipak said it is taking its strategic pledge to reduce the company’s carbon footprint to zero by 2025 to the next level.

The pulp – from a supplier in France – is made from office waste paper, archives and shredded books and has a post-consumer paper percentage of over 90 per cent.

Fibrepak is thin-walled and smooth-sided, as well as scratch-proof, and can be recycled in traditional waste streams along with paper, compostable and biodegradable materials.

The packaging natural and renewable, and customers benefit from a precisely moulded pulp product.

The company says that the new laboratory will showcase Kite’s packaging solutions to both existing and prospective customers. Onboard equipment includes a pneumatic carton stapler, paper void fill systems, and the Roboplat 708 and Robotape 50ME machines, among others.

In addition, packaging solutions can be trialled and tested live in the laboratory, Kite Packaging claims. The mobile laboratory contains a box testing facility, including a precise multi axis drop test attachment that allows the box to be dropped on different points, such as its edge or corner.

Paperboard applications coated with traditional, oil-based plastics had the drawback that the plastic needed to be separated from the paper before recycling can take place, otherwise the polymer can interfere with the recyclability of the paper. For this reason, many applications were not recycled but instead incinerated or landfilled as there was no other end-of-life option available.
