#PLASTICPACKAGING: ROLL-UP PACKAGING SAVES UP TO 50 PER CENT MATERIAL

A new HDPE bottle developed in cooperation with Beiersdorf for its NIVEA brand is good for the environment in a number of ways. The innovative bottle with cap developed for a body lotion series requires around half the packaging material usually needed. This therefore reduces the cost of materials as well as the associated carbon emissions. Its thin-walled structure makes it lighter and means it is easier to squeeze, while nevertheless remaining stable and impact-resistant enough for transportation, for example.

According to a news release from Kraft Heinz, the project installed roofing made from postconsumer flexible plastic into two Kraft Heinz manufacturing plants in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, and Holland, Michigan. The recycled roofing materials were installed late in 2020. Kraft Heinz says the materials included 4-foot-by-8-foot boards, and 94 percent of each board was made of postconsumer recycled plastic and fiber. Kraft Heinz says it’s using flexible plastic packaging in materials across its product portfolio.

On 2 February 2021, a truck filled with crude oil, which was recovered by chemically recycling reusable materials from SÜDPACK, left the RECENSO pilot plant in Ennigerloh near Münster. The goal of the strategic collaboration is to take reusable materials that cannot currently be mechanically recycled and recycle them on an industrial scale using the CARBOLIQ process to recover raw materials and consequently close further loops in the packaging industry.

29 Jan 2021

The majority of takeaway meals are packed, transported, and served in single-use plastic containers, most of which are then either burnt or dumped in our oceans. On top of this, take away packaging is ghastly - it's cheap, flimsy and however appealing the meal inside, the packaging completely detracts from the consumer experience.

A species of seagrass, named Posidonia oceanica, has the ability to catch and remove plastics from the ocean, according to researchers at the University of Barcelona.

The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, describes the role of the Posidonia as a filter and trap for plastics in coastal areas.

Because of this, it’s seen as a pioneering natural mechanism to take and remove these materials from the sea.

As part of the study, the team analysed the trapping and extraction of plastic in great seagrasses of the Posidonia on the coasts of Majorca.

The cost of accreditation and current price of PRNs means that it is not financially viable for some of the UK’s smaller plastics recycling businesses to get accredited under the scheme. Under the terms of the agreement, Valpak will work with Aylesbury Granulation to ensure accreditation costs are covered through PRN purchases. In return, Valpak has agreed an exclusive supply deal for the PRNs produced by the company.
