The launch marks a major step change in the packaging of cheese, which has moved from a mixed, triple-ply nylon laminate - one of the hardest to recycle materials - to a fully recyclable polyethylene (PE) monolaminate structure with built-in barrier properties.

Providing a direct replacement for current non-recyclable alternatives, the new MonoFlexBE format matches current shelf-life requirements, as well as maintaining packing line efficiencies. The film also delivers a significant plastic weight reduction of 680mg of plastic per bag to offer further carbon savings.

Finnish pulp and paper manufacturer Stora Enso has added a sustainable packaging solution to its Trayforma range for ready meals.

Named Trayforma PET34, the packaging includes less than 10% polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic content.

It is suitable for conventionally heated food packaging applications as it can withstand temperatures of up to 220°C.

In addition, the solution can be processed in fibre-based packaging recycling streams due to its considerably reduced use of fossil-based barrier materials.

The AFGC is now one year into the development of the NPRS, which will be Australia’s largest industry-led plastics recycling scheme. Supported by funding from the federal government’s Product Stewardship Investment Fund, the National Plastics Recycling Scheme will drive a dramatic expansion of soft plastics recycling. It will also increase the availability of post-consumer, food-grade recycled plastic for use in new products.

The AFGC is currently working with industry stakeholders to develop the NPRS, including examining ways to optimise collection opportunities.
