King’s Lynn-based Southgate Global has developed a new product called PET Tape, made from 85% recycling plastic.

Head of marketing Darren Smith said its new product development team had worked on the new tape which is described as “ideal” to close standard and recycled cardboard boxes. Its reduced thickness means it uses more than a fifth less plastic than standard tapes, the company said.

The recycled plastic will be obtained after processing the plastic material present in waste derived from consumer packaging, especially plastic bottles. These must be collected specifically to ensure the purity of the material and require specific processing tools.

In addition, to guarantee maximum health safety for consumers, this recycled plastic used to produce new cosmetic packaging, complies with food industry requirements and is subject to very demanding certifications.

The packaging, which marks the latest step by the Big 4 retailer to remove, reduce, recycle and reuse plastic from its operations, aims to prevent nearly 12 million plastic bottles – or 297 tonnes of plastic – from entering the ocean each year and further polluting it.

Sainsbury’s said it would use Prevented Ocean Plastic – a high-quality certified recycled plastic – while working with packaging supplier Sharpak to ensure 34 per cent of its fresh fish and 80 per cent of strawberry punnets are sold using packaging made from plastic rescued from coastal areas.
