As part of the process to reduce its environmental impact, Bel Group was looking for a solution to remove the plastic coating on the cartonboard packaging used for its entire Boursin range of flavoured cream cheeses. After two years of research and testing in close collaboration with the customer, AR Packaging in Cholet, France, has developed the solution. The Safeboard® packaging has made it possible for Bel to move away from the use of PE-coated cartonboard for its entire Boursin range (80g, 155g and 250g).

As part of its sustainability strategy, one of the goals the German food store chain has set itself is to use 30% less packaging material for its own brands by 2025 by doing away with shrink film, for example. Moreover, recyclable packaging is to be introduced in this segment by 2022. The KHS Group and Martens Brewery have played a major role in the first step in the switch to a sustainable portfolio. The brewery and Dortmund engineering company have been working closely together on the development and establishment of disruptive technologies for decades.

Unlike aluminium or tin cans, this plastic bottle from ALPLA is extremely light and shock-resistant. The warm surface and transparent appearance along with the wide range of designs make this packaging solution particularly appealing for cosmetic products. The light weight results in less material being used and lower freight expenses, impacting positively on the carbon footprint. The bottle consists completely of PET and is therefore optimal for recycling. In addition, the internal coating that is quite typical for aluminium or tin cans is not needed for the PET bottle.

To advance the sustainability features of its toothpaste tubes, Henkel uses Albéa’s proprietary Greenleaf tube technology, which enables the packaging to be fully recyclable wherever collection schemes are active. Greenleaf tubes are recognized by the Association of Plastic Recylers (USA) and Suez.Circpack (Europe) as technically recyclable within the existing, effective HDPE bottles recycling stream. What’s more, the unique tube-making technology uses a single-blown film, thus significantly reducing the product’s CO2 footprint.

Neopac Introduces Market’s First Recyclable PE Based Mono-material Tube with HDPE Flip-top Cap

The new tube solutions are a packaging first: fully recyclable tube solutions whose body, shoulder and caps are composed of a single material family. Also available in screw-top formats, the new tubes are ideal for health & beauty, food and pharma packaging applications.

In existing recycling streams, mono-material plastic packaging is exceedingly more preferable than combination plastics, as its comparable simplicity is considered fully recyclable in mechanical recycling plants and therefore a key factor in moving toward a truly circular packaging landscape.
