For so many of us, it’s a given that we can identify our favourite food products and read on-pack instructions. But for those who are blind and partially sighted, this information is inaccessible and it’s a problem.

“I have been registered blind since I was a young lad,” explains Marc Powell, strategic accessibility lead at the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB). “I’ve accepted that packaging is not accessible.”

Clover Sonoma, a third-generation family-owned and operated dairy and Certified B Corporation®, today announced it is launching the first post-consumer recycled (PCR) gallon milk jug in the United States. Starting with thirty percent PCR content on its organic gallon milk line, the company commits to increasing the PCR content and extending PCR content use across all Clover Sonoma gallon milk jugs by 2025.

Srichakra Polyplast commissions food-grade plastic recycling facility, invests $10 million

Srichakra Polyplast has commissioned a food-grade quality recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) pellet facility and a new polyolefins recycling facility to produce deodorised bottle-to-bottle grade quality polyolefin pellets.

The Hyderabad-based plastic recycling and waste management company has invested $10 million to strengthen its recycling capabilities for high grade recycled plastic to customers in India and global markets such as Europe and the United States.

Kellogg’s rolls out accessible packs for the sight impaired across Europe

This announcement comes after a successful UK trial last year( see AIPIA newsletter 14-10-20) in partnership with Co-op, on Kellogg’s Coco Pops boxes. Evaluation of the pilot by the UK charity Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) showed that 97% of the participants would like to see more of these accessibility features available on grocery packaging.

Tetra Pak’s 22nd annual sustainability report is highlighting the company’s 70 percent greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) reduction in its own operations from 2010 to 2020, Scope 1 and 2. The company also reduced total emissions by 19 percent within the same time frame.

The company is now working toward achieving net-zero GHG emissions in it own operations by 2030, with an ambition to go net-zero across the value chain by 2050.

Pre-Summit in Rome sets the scene for September’s UN Food Systems Summit

The first is the focus on food loss and waste (FLW).  Given that 1/3 of food is lost or wasted between the farm and fork each year, equivalent to wasting 1/4 of the world’s freshwater used by agriculture and emitting around 8% of global greenhouse gases, this should be of no surprise to anyone. The UN has made it clear that “countries will not be able to achieve Net Zero and are unlikely to deliver the Paris Agreement on climate change without tackling FLW.”
