Cross-industry JV brings $50m rPET facility to Vic

Set to drive a significant increase in the state’s PET recycling capacity, the plant will be built in an industrial precinct on Horsburgh Drive, with construction planned to start in early 2022 and finish in 2023.

It is expected to create more than 100 local jobs during the construction phase and 45 permanent roles once it’s complete. The capital expenditure for the project will be around $50 million.

LactaLogics and Scholle IPN to develop aseptic baby food packaging

US-based baby food company LactaLogics has finalised a partnership with flexible packaging manufacturer Scholle IPN for developing aseptic packaging technology.

The companies have partnered after carrying out a packaging research and development phase.

The collaboration will involve integrating Scholle IPN’s solutions with LactaLogics’ Gentle-UHT processing capabilities to deliver safe human milk-based products for infants in pharmaceutical-grade packaging.

Syntegon develops paper-based food packaging as part of EIT Food project, ‘PACK4SENSE’

  • Optimized recyclability thanks to easier separation of all packaging components

Together with partners from industry and research, namely Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging in Dresden, Colruyt Group, Strauss Group and the University of Reading, Syntegon is implementing the EIT project “PACK4SENSE” (Paper packaging for SENSitive foods) to develop a sustainable packaging concept.

TIPA launches home compostable transparent laminate for food packaging

The new laminate has the same functionality as TIPA’s T.LAM 607 but is TUV OK Home Compost certified, meaning it can be disposed of in-home composting bins where it will break down leaving no toxic pollutants behind.

TIPA said T.LAM 608 will also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions resulting from food waste being sent to landfill by offering consumers the convenience of disposing of their food in their home composting bins whilst still in its packaging – eliminating the need to separate any food from the packaging it came in.

Tesco partners with Faerch to launch PET recycling initiative

The companies say that PET shelf-ready packaging, which is used in UK supermarkets to transport products, is usually downcycled into non-food applications. The new ‘tray to tray’ initiative will involve Faerch collecting secondary PET and using its advanced recycling process to make new primary food contact packaging, including pots, tubs, and trays.

Exposures to some of the 4,000 or so members of the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) class of chemicals have been associated with potential adverse health effects such as high cholesterol, low infant birth weight, reduced antibody response to vaccines and high blood pressure. While environmental studies of PFAS have advanced, gaps remain in our understanding of how much humans are exposed to PFAS from food and packaging, and the associated risks, if any.
