Nanotechnology is a groundbreaking field offering promising avenues to tackle the sustainability challenges inherent in packaging.

At its core, nanotechnology deals with materials and structures at the nanoscale, typically ranging from 1 to 100 nanometers. A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter, roughly the size of a few atoms aligned side by side. At such minuscule dimensions, materials exhibit unique properties, often vastly different from their bulk counterparts.

The company derives its raw material base from cellulose, which it says is the most abundant biopolymer on earth and one AIPIA has championed as a potential basis for antimicrobial/antibacterial packaging films. The technology creates Cellulose Nano Crystals (CNCs) which provide plants with extraordinary strength and that can be utilized as a building block for the enhancement of existing materials and for the production of novel eco-friendly materials, says Melodea.

According to a press release, Werner & Mertz and Beiersdorf, in cooperation with Dr. Frank Welle from the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging, have drawn up an inventory of existing recyclates on the European market in a bid to provide the industry some guidance and increase clarity on the usage of recycled plastic in cosmetics packaging.
