Specially-wrapped Peanut Slabs in plant-based compostable packaging went on sale in Wellington and Porirua from Monday as part of an eight-week trial.

Slab eaters are being asked to put their used wrappers into a special collection box based at the retail outlet, which are then taken to For the Better Good’s Edible Earth Urban Micro Farm in Cannon's Creek for composting.

Eric Oransky of Maine Ocean Farms joins his crew of four on a Wednesday morning in Freeport, loading coolers and large containers of ice on what's expected to be a large harvest of farmed oysters.

Oransky and his colleague, Erin Adams, loaded the coolers down to Carter, who also works at Maine Ocean Farms.

Once packed, they made the journey to the floating oyster farm and take in a few hundred Wet Smack and Recompense Cove Oysters, their signature oyster breed.

It will help expand consumer access to composting, reducing landfill waste and its accompanying greenhouse gas emissions. Easy-to-sort compostable packaging helps reduce contamination in the organics bin and with states like California mandating food recycling, this is needed now more than ever.

US-based food products manufacturer Mars Wrigley has partnered with standardised labelling system provider How2Recycle to develop a more sustainable packaging option for its Orbit Gum.

The 30-piece Orbit Mega Pack features an outer plastic package that can be recycled in around 50% of recycling streams in the US, with more locations to be made available in future.

Intended for on-the-go durability, the product is available on shelves for purchase at retailers across the nation and offered in Peppermint and Spearmint flavours.
