  • Breast milk samples were taken from 34 healthy mothers
  • Microplastics were detected in 75% of them

Raising a grave concern, a group of researchers said they found microplastics in human breast milk. Since breastfeeding is by far the best way to feed a baby, experts notified they are worried about the health of the infant, who are especially vulnerable to chemical contaminants.

The breast milk research, published in the journal Polymers, found microplastics composed of polyethylene, PVC and polypropylene, which are all found in packaging.

As of today, the old 500g packs of the powdered coffee brand have been traded out for new 450g ones, in what is yet another example of the ‘shrinkflation’ phenomenon.

The packs have also increased in price, as Tesco is now selling the new packs at £3, up from £2.70 for the old size, according to data from retail research analysts Assosia.

Meanwhile in Asda, 450g packs were being sold at £2.55 – the same price as they had been in their previous version.

The list of outlawed plastics includes single-use drink stirrers, plastic cotton buds, most plastic meat trays, polystyrene takeaway packaging for food and beverages, foam takeaway containers or some instant noodle cups, and plastics with additives which make them fragment into micro-plastics.

“On average, every year each New Zealander sends about 750kgs of waste to landfill. Some products can’t be recycled and are unnecessary,” Environment Minister David Parker said on Friday.

The Food and Drug Administration will research and propose a standardized front-of-package labeling system to help consumers more readily understand nutrition information, the White House said Tuesday.

The proposed update to the existing setup, in which nutritional information is provided primarily on the backs of labels, is part of the Biden administration's effort to help consumers make healthy choices and “to shift our health care system away from just treating disease to preventing it,” a senior administration official told reporters on a call.
