As of today, the old 500g packs of the powdered coffee brand have been traded out for new 450g ones, in what is yet another example of the ‘shrinkflation’ phenomenon.
The packs have also increased in price, as Tesco is now selling the new packs at £3, up from £2.70 for the old size, according to data from retail research analysts Assosia.
Meanwhile in Asda, 450g packs were being sold at £2.55 – the same price as they had been in their previous version.
“We are no longer producing the 500g pack and this has been replaced by a 450g pack,” a spokesperson for Nestlé said.
The FMCG giant was “experiencing significant increases in the cost of raw materials, energy, packaging and transportation,” making it increasingly expensive to manufacture its products.
“To ensure we can maintain the same high quality and delicious taste that consumers know and love, on occasions we do need to make minor adjustments to the weight of our products,” she added.
The news comes as Nestlé continues its trend of shrinking a number of products from its signature brands, including tubs of Quality Street, which have been progressively downsized since 2019.
