Over 150 Million Chocolate Santa Clauses in Aluminium Foil Coat

Every year over 150 million chocolate Santa Claus are produced in the aluminum foil coat for the Christmas season in Europe. That's an increase of about 1 percent over 2016, and with an average packaging size of 0.025 square meters per figure, that's more than 3,750,000 square meters.

Stora Enso and startup Sulapac have joined forces to develop renewable and biodegradable straws

Stora Enso and Sulapac continue to combat the global problem of plastic waste by launching a demo for sustainable drinking straws at Slush 2018, a leading startup event that gathers 20 000 tech enthusiasts from around the world. The demo, which targets production on an industrial scale, is designed to replace traditional plastic straws with renewable ones. The straws are based on Sulapac’s biocomposite material – made of wood and natural binders – designed to be recycled via industrial composting and biodegrade in marine environments.

Heat resistant films

The films have been engineered to work as printing layer replacing BOPET film in multi-layer laminates for various packaging applications in both food and non-food segments. The new heat resistant films are clear, non-heat sealable and both sides treated films with excellent printability and go mostly for reverse printing. The thermally stable films have excellent slip properties and good machinability and therefore work well on high speed FFS packaging machines.

Geneva, January 30, 2018 - Innovation and personalization have been at the forefront of the first edition of the “Be Surlyn® and Design” contest, organized by DuPont in partnership with the School of Art and Design (Haute École d’Art et de Design or “HEAD”) of Geneva and the trend agency Beautystreams. Bachelor of Arts students from the HEAD department of ‘product, jewelry and accessory design’, took on the challenge of designing a new perfume cap made with DuPont™ Surlyn®.

Late HIV diagnosis: Tackling a persistent problem

During the first few years of the HIV epidemic, a person who developed AIDS could expect to live for less than a year.1 In San Francisco between 1981 and 1985 – the year the first blood test for HIV was developed2 – median survival after AIDS was diagnosed was just 10.1-12.6 months.1 Today, the life expectancy for a person who is diagnosed and starts antiretroviral treatment (ART) rapidly after HIV infection probably approaches that of the general population.3

Compostable Cups with PLA Lids

New at Stonehouse: the Go Green. This is a series of compostable cups with PLA lids that can be found in all stores since November. The design of the Go Green cups was developed by Van der Windt's own design studio in the Netherlands.

 

The compostable coffee cups are double-walled and have a capacity of 12 oz and a PLA lid. Thanks to the barcode on the inner pack, Stonehouse sells the cups per pack of 25 or per box of 500. The lids are also packaged in small packs, these are sold in quantities from 50 to 1000 for a whole box.

NFC tag tells how long to heat the product

A US startup has demonstrated a way to prepare packaged food items “without a distracting trip to the kitchen”, using an induction pad and products bearing NFC tags that tell the base unit how to heat them. The system, from Michigan-based Inductive Intelligence, turns paper, plastic, glass, foil pouch and metal packaging into heatable IoT devices. “The package requires two things to work, data and metal,” explains CEO Greg Clark. “The data comes in the form of a RFID or NFC tag which tells the device exactly how to heat the product.
