SIG is first to offer aseptic cartons using ASI-certified aluminium foil

SIG will offer the world’s first aseptic carton packs that use foil certified to the ASI standard. This will add value for customers, brands and retailers by promoting responsible sourcing throughout the value chain – from suppliers all the way through to consumers.

SIG customers will also have the option to include the ASI label on packs to show consumers that SIG sources responsibly the aluminium it uses in the cartons – in the same way they can already include the FSCTM label on any SIG pack to show that the liquid paper board comes from responsible sources.

Nick Barber, Commercial Director said: “We have seen very pleasing volumes for masterbatch and additives over the past 12 months, and it has become apparent that there is just as great if not greater demand for compounding of late. Particularly with the increase in use of Flame retardants, which can be inherently difficult to colour with masterbatch.”

Sainsbury’s makes commitments to cut plastic packaging

Sainsbury’s will also introduce a trial scheme for customers to ‘pre-cycle’ by providing an area for customers to remove unwanted primary and secondary packaging in store and leave it for recycling. This means that food remains protected through the supply chain, but offers the customer the option to recycle before they take the item home.

In addition, from today, Sainsbury’s will remove plastic packaging from sweetheart and savoy cabbages, cutting a further 100 tonnes of plastic packaging over the next year, as part of a drive to significantly reduce plastic packaging.

Amazon's high speed robot packs 700 boxes per hour

As Reuters reports, Amazon has been experimenting with a new type of automated packaging robot that can 3D scan the goods included in an order as they travel down a conveyor belt. Those goods are then placed in a custom-size box the robot creates that's perfectly sized to fit. Each robot packer can handle up to 700 orders per hour, and as per calculations one robot at a warehouse means 24 human roles are no longer required. If the same robot was rolled out to each of Amazon's US facilities, that would be 1,300 roles removed.

Waitrose working on new food film made from langoustine shells

Waitrose & Partners has joined forces with Scottish biotec company CuanTec to work on a new film for food packaging made out of waste langoustine shells.

CuanTec - based in Motherwell and Oban - takes waste langoustine shells created from seafood processing to make a natural polymer - which can then be turned into a flexible film. The material also has the potential to be both industrially and home compostable.
