PET Film crisis in India - New opportunities

" Each problem has hidden within it an opportunity so powerful that it literally dwarfs the problem. The greatest success stories were created by people who recognized a problem and turned it into an opportunity."  Joseph Sugarman

So this is the situation in India, PET film prices going up heavily and people are not ready to run alternate materials like OPP or PE film combinations. I think its an opportunity to work on alternate combinations. There is no invention required. It is just the need to come together and make the small group of machine supplier, alternate film supplier , user, converter and resin supplier. If these 5 people work together, I am sure a workable solution can be quickly found using the current available technologies without any further investments. There might be some small investments required at end users but I think those are simple to manage looking at the opportunity available!

Do you have any suggestions or recommendations to move forward? Any idea what could be the size of this new market?

Right discussion at the right time and we at Max Speciality Films are fully agreed with the statement that it is indeed a great opportunity for all to work together and explore new opportunities. We truly appreciate this thought of to bring all packaging elements together for an opportunity to work on alternate combinations. I would like to share with all that we at Max Speciality Films have worked with some converters and end user for the replacement of metallised polyester with special high barrier metallised BOPP. Jointly we worked for the replacement project and are able to replace middle(for triplet structure) metallised polyester with our special high barrier both side treated metallised BOPP for Shampoo, Gutka and Snacks laminates. Replacement is as under:Old Structure: PET / MET PET / POLY Replaced Structure: PET / MET BOPP / POLY Accelerated studies have been done with the replaced structure for various properties like interlayer bond strength, metal adhesion, WVTR etc and found that above structure is fully appropriate for the replacement. Convertors and end users are comfortable with the replacement and using Max’s both side treated high barrier metallised BOPP as a replacement of metallised polyester. Also we are working for the replacement of metallised polyester from two ply structure with cold seal adhesives using high barrier both side treated metallised BOPP. Secondly we are also working for the replacement of top layer clear polyester film replacement with clear BOPP for various existing laminates. We are in the process of developing special BOPP having improved heat resistant & tearability properties for the purpose. Trials and accelerated studies are under way for this replacement.  Max is ready to work with converters / end users / ink, adhesive & machine suppliers for this replacement project and welcomes everybody who wants to work on this project. We are also putting lot of efforts to come with an alternate solution. But when we think about OPP or PE lot of issues arises in high speed m/c.It may be cutting or machinability or shelf life or any other parameters. It would be realy beneficial if we can do some study to find out alternate structure to replace PET based structure

Hi friends,                  I want to clarify some doubts reg rate of PET films. I am from Sivakasi. In Chennai the rate was Rs.280/=+4% tax, for 12microns PET film till 13.11.10. Suddenly it was reduced to 235/=+ 4% Tax. Whether the downtrend  will continue? What is the Rate in other parts of the Country? Vasanthan.

Although PET rate ha come down, but again expected to go up in December-January period, as 5 European lines are still not functional. And, still date, nobody has idea whether price of PET will go further up or not, when the new PET manufacturing line in India will be functional (some players are lareday taken initiative), etc. And, everybody knows that because of formation of CARTEL of PET manufactureres in India, this scenario happened. However, Mr. Goyel has started the discussion in correct time, and now everybody should look up the alternate solution as well come forward with different trials. And, one of the suggestion, which I have at this point, why don't we think about 18 micron BOPP film also, both side treated. Riju Mukherjee

The movement of Pet film prices have now been checked because of ban on packing of gutkha in pouches effective since March 2011 which has  badly hit  the consumption of pet film as this segment roughly consumes 35 to 40% of the film sold in domesic market. As for the BOPP films in flexible packaging I feel that most of the bopp film producers have not done enough in the domestic  market to effectively promote the films to convertors of flexible packaging. Its one thing to develop the films suiting the need of particular segment of flexible packaging Industry but its equally important to promote the film and its suitaibility in an effective manner from convertors  to  the end user who is going to use the laminate  to fill his product. Promotion of Bopp films in Indian market will require close interaction with Converting machine manufacturers to FFS machine manufacturers which can eliminate most of the problems related to usage of bopp in converting industry like operating speeds, drying process and  temperature control etc. and more or less similar problems bieng faced by end users on FFS machines. The high usage of bopp overseas in flexible packaging is mostly facilitated by sophisticated Hi-tech, hi-speed converting machines  used by convertors as well as sophisticated FFS machines used by the end packers. The usage of bopp has not picked up as yet and has tremendous scope in the Indian Market.

I think all flexible packaging converters should have cartel system so these PET manufacturers will not have importance themselves.
