This is quite interesting that some people look at packaging as an art while some just look at it like science. Lot of work on packaging is dine by advertising companies who mostly come with art background. The education in packaging in most of the time called Packaging Technology or Packaging Science.

So thinking this, we started a poll on LinkedIn Is Packaging an Art or Science or you can click http://linkd.in/pD944s  We look forward to your responses and comments on this issue. We would also keep updating some of the comments that we will get this interesting topic through LinkedIn.

Thank you and Happy Polling,

For product - package compatibility, science plays imp role & for aesthetic appeal, art has main role. We need to consider costing of package also while designing, So as per my opinion, packaging is combination of Science, Art & Commerce."

Packaging is a Technology for safe delivery of goods upto the ultimate consumer at affordable price. ( Basic definition of Packaging)

"A lot will depend on what sector of the business you service. If you are primarily serving the industrial or brown box sector, you will likely lean more towards science as you probably should. If you are serving the retail/pop sector, currently the emphasis has been on art. I believe it needs a better balance in this sector. I see a lot of waste and excess cost because science has been demphasized so much."

PACKAGING IS A SCIENCE BECAUSE WE ARE RECHARCING AND INNOVATING NEW THINGS IN THE PACKAGING BY TAKING CARE OF PRODUCT LIFE,COMPRESSION,NATURAL CALAMITY, IT IS AN ART BECAUSE WE ARE SEEING THE PACLAGE TO BE CUSTOMER FRIENDLY AND CAST EFFECTIVE. IT SHOULD ACCPT BY ALL FOR PRESENT CIRCUMSTANCE. WE ARE ACTING LIKE A SCIENTIST, ARTIST, ECANOMIST. WE ARE THE BACK BONE OF THE ENTIRE COMMODIDTY MARKETING

Roberto Tan • Packing is a science. Packaging is an art form. WHY? Packaging requires understanding of the content and its components/materials. Packaging is an design that helps to keep the intended object to a set requirements, be it for storage, for identification or for communication. Inappropriate packaging can do more harm than good.

Mel is right, the retail sector do demand eye catching packs, after all the overall appearance of a product and shelf placement is important. The supermarkets in the U.K. are very sensitive about the type of material used and that packaging is not excessive. This is where the science is involved to attain eye catching design with minimal material."

According to Gordon Millar ( on running discussion as Packaging is an art or Science ??? ) "The selling of packaging is artistic and scientific in that you must make it appealing, fit for purpose and of course, be able to calculate the price (arithmetic -which is a form of science).   "So many products are OVER packaged, I hate paying for something with too much packing, which ends up in land fill. I respect companies that cut packaging to a minimum, or make the packaging re-usable." Posted by Jane Stockel , who voted for "Both"
