Palouse Fiber Packaging unveils wheat-based solution

25 May 2024
PC Correspondent

Washington-based sustainable packaging company Palous Fiber Packaging (PFP) has launched new 4-cup carriers made with wheat straw pulp.

The company aims to provide an alternative to global supplies of milled wood or post-consumer recycled material, which it says are “deceptively marketed as being greener than other materials”.

The carriers will be made using fibre from harvested wheat crops, which is locally sourced and used as a moulding medium instead of being incinerated as agricultural waste.

WINE BOTTLE WEIGHS ONLY 50 GRAMS

The global packaging specialist ALPLA has added a PET wine bottle to its product range. The 0.75-litre bottle weighs just 50 grams – around eight times less than the alternative made of glass. The first white wine bottles belonging to the Wegenstein winery recently went into circulation in the Austrian wine market, making them part of the Europe-wide bottle-to-bottle loop. The sustainable solution reduces carbon consumption by 38 per cent compared to the glass alternative – and that's even without rPET content.

The ‘premium quality’ packaging contains 50% recycled plastic and meets stringent food contact requirements.

Launched in the UK and Ireland for PepsiCo snack brand, Sunbites, the packaging is made by recycling plastic waste into food grade packaging material. This is done using an advanced recycling process, a complementary approach to mechanical recycling, which enables the recycled materials to satisfy the demanding EU regulatory requirements for applications such as food contact packaging, contact sensitive and medical devices.

Serbia amends municipal packaging waste reduction targets

24 May 2024
PC Correspondent

All materials that products are packed and wrapped in and the ones used to protect the products in transportation from the producer to the consumer become packaging waste after they are used.

Serbia adopted the Law on Packaging and Packaging Waste, introducing the system of extended responsibility of producers. It stipulates that economic entities placing products with packaging on the market are obligated to include the costs of collecting and processing the packaging in the product price.
