Avocado tree waste used to make sustainable food packaging

29 Oct 2024
PC Correspondent

Although plastic has allowed for convenient, hygienic food packaging, plastic waste continues to be a major problem for the environment. To make food packaging more sustainable, researchers at the University of Córdoba and the University of Girona in Spain turned to avocado pruning residue — the branches and leaves removed from avocado trees annually.

This residue is a source of biomass, the term given to plant-based materials not consumed as food. Spain’s southern region of Andalucía is ripe with fruit trees, particularly avocado.

Aldi removes pulp trays and punnets from fruit and veg packaging

29 Oct 2024
PC Correspondent

Additionally, Aldi is removing pulp trays from its Nature's Pick Mango twin pack and Avocado twin pack, to reduce the amount of packaging. These changes could see the UK's fourth-largest supermarket remove over 370 tonnes of plastic and packaging per year if rolled out across all stores.

These are just some of the latest changes in the supermarket's continuing efforts to reduce its environmental impact and develop alternative packaging for its products.

Amazon says it ditched plastic air pillows

25 Oct 2024
PC Correspondent

Amazon says that it has gotten rid of plastic air pillows at its warehouses.

“As of October 2024, we’ve removed all plastic air pillows from our delivery packaging used at our global fulfillment centers,” the e-commerce giant said in an October 9th blog post.

It’s a welcome change following years of pressure from environmental groups to stop plastic pollution flooding into oceans. The company is still working to reduce the use of single-use plastics more broadly in its packaging.
