Coca-Cola is trialing technology in Europe that turns hard-to-recycle plastic into new bottles, as part of its effort to meet its sustainability goals. 

The Liquipure offering consists of mono-material bag-in-box solutions that align with global design guidelines for flexible packaging such as Ellen MacArthur Foundation, CEFLEX, and Association of Plastics Recyclers. By utilizing the latest in advanced resin technology, Liquibox, a global leader in flexible packaging and dispensing, designed a never-before-seen flexible bag for liquids that provides excellent barrier properties, without the need for nylon or metPET, meaning it is ready to be recycled.

Solinatra, a Rosiro Group company, produces capsules with high oxygen and water vapour barrier properties, to safeguard product freshness.

The Refill Coalition announced that supermarket chain Aldi has joined its industry partners in order to fight against the use of single-use plastic packaging in the market.

The Refill Coalition is Aldi, British grocery firm Ocado, retailer Waitrose & Partners and the supply chain solutions company CHEP.

It was convened in 2020 by a UK-based firm Unpackaged with funding from UK Research & Innovation’s Smart Plastics Packaging Challenge.

The Refill Coalition co-designs and develops refill solutions that minimise and remove the use of single-use plastic.

The new box incorporates the brand’s diamond-shaped label through a cut-out at the front of the box. An inner lid with eye-catching cut-outs to hold the fragile bottle firmly was also part of the design for the Northern Ireland-based distillery.

The world’s plastic pollution problem is a large and complex challenge — more than 91% of plastic isn’t even recycled and is left sitting in landfills or littering our oceans and communities. Reducing plastic waste requires entire industries to come together and take more meaningful action.
