  • This is the first comprehensive public study analyzing the recycling value chain for single-use beverage containers in five key markets.
  • The data shows that today more than 70% of the material used in aluminium cans is recycled into new products – almost double that of glass (34%) and plastic (40%).

The German tinplate manufacturer thyssenkrupp Rasselstein launches the world’s first food can made of CO2-reduced bluemint® Steel together with the Swiss companies Hoffmann Neopac and Ricola in March. The three companies, where sustainability and conservation of resources are part of the corporate strategy, have joined forces to launch the first food can made of CO2-reduced packaging steel, thus making packaging even more sustainable.

Greiner Packaging seeks certification for home compostable capsule packaging

Whether used for coffee, tea, or baby food, capsules made from aluminum or plastic are now a must-have in many households. To improve their ecological footprint, Greiner Packaging is currently working on a solution made from compostable polymer, so that customers can easily recycle used capsules on their own backyard compost heaps. The process of having the sustainable packaging certified by TÜV AUSTRIA BELGIUM nv started in February, with completion expected in the fall.

Citing long-term patient adherence to medication as low as 50%, Cole said by introducing a smart element to their pharmaceutical packaging, companies could incentivize an increase in adherence and thus easily recoup the extra outlay, particularly for high mark-up products.

“With a 1,000% mark up, we can actually afford to spend three times as much on our packaging and get the same amount of income, provided we are getting an improvement in adherence,” he said.
