Leading French Dairy Cooperative Moves Towards a Circular Economy

Laïta, one of the leading dairy cooperatives in Western France, has been focusing on reducing single-use plastic packaging in response to evolving customer expectations and regulatory pressures. Mathieu Boulc’h, Packaging Development & Procurement Manager at Laïta, highlights that customers increasingly demand more sustainable packaging options, and laws such as France’s AGEC regulation and the EU's PPWR are driving the shift toward recyclability.

Solenis, a leading producer of specialty chemicals, is collaborating with Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (HEIDELBERG), an innovative technology company with a leading position in the global printing industry, to advance a more cost-effective way of integrating barrier coatings for paper packaging directly within the existing flexographic printing process.

Barrier coatings are used to repel hot and cold liquids, oils, greases, and water vapor in paper packaging.

To reduce the amount of plastic packaging it uses, Tesco has moved its Finest range of dried pasta into paper packaging, saving more than 10 million pieces of plastic a year, weighing more than 30 tonnes.

In total, 10 lines have moved into the new packaging, which will also be available in Tesco Express stores. The new packs are 100% recyclable and can be put into household recycling bins.

The company already enjoys a long-standing relationship with Henkel, a global leader in many industrial and consumer businesses. UPM Specialty Papers also recently embarked on projects with Koenig & Bauer, a globally active printing press manufacturer and software solutions provider.

Partnering with Creapaper, Ranpak has successfully made grass paper a mainstream product, marking a world-first in the industry.

“GrasiKraft paper represents the output of a significant amount of testing and research to determine a suitable alternative fibre source that could be used in Ranpak’s paper products,” said David Murgio, Ranpak’s Chief Sustainability Officer. “Diversifying our fibre sources in a sustainable manner is good for business and the planet.”

In addition to Laîta’s strong commitment to responsible solutions, regulations such as the AGEC in France, banning single-use plastics to promote a circular economy, and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation in the EU, are pushing brand owners to switch to recyclable mono-materials. Regularly conducted marketing studies done by Laîta also confirms that reducing the use of single-use plastic packaging is increasingly important for customers.

Billerud offers two main ranges of medical paper – SteriKraft, which constitutes ‘clean and safe’ microbial barrier paper for medical applications; and MediKraft, comprising of strong, high-purity papers for non-microbial barrier properties.

The MediKraft SealBase is produced at Billerud’s Skärblacka mill in Sweden. It is a 38gsm-grade paper designed to serve as a base paper for medical synthetic cold seal coatings.

The LEGO Group is advancing its commitment to sustainability with the introduction of paper-based packaging across its products. As part of its goal to make all packaging more sustainable by 2025, the company has begun replacing single-use plastic pre-pack bags in LEGO boxes with paper bags made from Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®C117818) certified forests and FSC-controlled wood.

Through this partnership, the brand has launched Date Energy Bars, India’s first energy bar with compostable flexible packaging.

The new Date Energy Bars, produced by Brawny Bear, are packaged using Pakka Limited’s compostable flexible packaging. This product not only offers a healthy snack option but also addresses the growing concern of packaging waste in India.
