PVC has been the material of choice for many years for fresh food applications because of its many protective and presentation benefits.

However, its complex composition makes it difficult to recycle and if even minute amounts of the material are processed with other polymers, it can render the other recyclates unusable.

Greiner Packaging, Siegwerk and Krones have collaborated on an initiative that showcases the capabilities of recycling facilities in transforming direct-printed polypropylene and polystyrene (PS) cups.

Using hot caustic washing, a standard procedure in PET bottle recycling, the initiative deinks and converts rigid containers into high-quality white recyclates while maintaining the integrity of the ink formulation and print design.

Bacardi unveils “world’s first” hydrogen energy-fuelled glass spirits bottle

Bacardi has completed the “world’s first” commercial production of a hydrogen energy-fuelled glass spirits bottle.

The trial, which took place earlier this month, saw Bacardi partnering with premium glass maker Hrastnik1860 to innovate technology for a glass furnace powered with hydrogen as its main energy source. This initiative reduces GHG emissions associated with traditional glass bottle production.

Aimed at improving sustainability, R-Skin is driven by one of the cornerstones of the WeCare project: reducing packaging material and the benefits of recycling.

Traditionally, skin packaging required sturdy, extremely thick trays to avoid the deformations and defects that occurred during the packaging process.
