The company has developed a new material, also called Toraphene, that uses biopolymers that compost naturally and biodegrade without human intervention, even in the ocean.

The biopolymers are combined with Nobel Prize-winning graphene, which is derived from carbon and is stronger than diamond at an atomic level.

While biodegradable plastics currently exist, they rely on commercial composting, which uses energy to heat the compost, as well as presenting other logistical challenges.

Becton, Dickinson, and Company (BD)’s BD SCF PremiumCoat Plunger Stopperade in partnership with Aptar Pharma, has been designed to support the injection of biologics into subcutaneous tissue with a -mL pre-filled syringe. BD and Aptar Pharma introduced the new stopper in October 2021.

Decreasing the use of virgin plastic
This November, the brand has started introducing five shampoo and conditioner collections in primary packaging made from Eastman Renew resins with 50% certified recycled plastic. Five Herbal Essences bio:renew sulfate-free collections, including the Aloe Vera lineup, will be upgraded to Eastman Renew materials beginning this month. These will be followed by two new collections coming to market in January 2022. These new packages will also include standardized How2Recycle® labels to clarify recycling instructions and encourage recycling

The CMYK colour printing technology allows brands to print QR codes and logos, for digital engagement with consumers.

Machine-direction orientation (MDO) film has a growing presence in food and consumer packaging. In recent months the confectionary and snacks marketplace has been requesting the industry for a metallised MDO PE based film.

Thanks to the thermo-lamination technology, which bonds individual films together through exposure to heat without using the adhesives that are required for classic lamination, production of M-Compact 77 is more environmentally friendly and resource efficient. Smurfit Kappa has achieved a 12% bag weight reduction and 7% less CO2 emissions.1

Finnish pulp and paper manufacturer Stora Enso has added a sustainable packaging solution to its Trayforma range for ready meals.

Named Trayforma PET34, the packaging includes less than 10% polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic content.

It is suitable for conventionally heated food packaging applications as it can withstand temperatures of up to 220°C.

In addition, the solution can be processed in fibre-based packaging recycling streams due to its considerably reduced use of fossil-based barrier materials.
