The pilot replaces traditional barcodes on 12 own-brand meat and produce lines in a small number of locations across southern England. Developed in collaboration with GS1 UK and ten supplier partners, the initiative is primarily focused on capturing use-by dates and batch numbers, enabling Tesco to assess how QR codes powered by GS1 can improve date code accuracy, reduce food waste and add a further protection to help prevent the sale of out-of-date products.

In collaboration with Fire Camera, the IS Protect Plus System uses multiple cameras to detect fire and other incidents by monitoring all areas of the IS machine: the mould side, blank side, shears, feeder and conveyor.

Depending on what the system detects, it can perform a sequence of automated actions to prevent escalation.

To date, they report that they haven’t experienced a single customer issue with a split or open bag since the change and are considering several more machines as their business continues to experience rapid growth.

The footwear company had already invested in automation within their warehouse and found that the packing of goods was then not keeping up with the rest of the operation.

The footwear specialists calculated that, to cover their new level of demand with manual packing stations, they would need to run 16 packing benches, operating 7am – 10pm, 7 days of the week.
