A new kind of compostable carrier bag that is made from the same material as egg shells and has a much lower carbon footprint than plastic, paper and other “biodegradable” bags has been launched in the UK.

Known as the Happy Dolphin, the bag is the result of a £4m EU commission to invent a new kind of plastic substitute to help solve the waste crisis.

Its developers are in discussions with UK supermarkets about using their bag and have signed a deal in Vietnam to supply four billion of them to Seven-11 outlets in the country.

"PHA is made from plants, turns into feedstock for microorganisms, and leaves nothing behind. Simple as that," says Will Preston, CEO of BIOLO.

Paperboard applications coated with traditional, oil-based plastics had the drawback that the plastic needed to be separated from the paper before recycling can take place, otherwise the polymer can interfere with the recyclability of the paper. For this reason, many applications were not recycled but instead incinerated or landfilled as there was no other end-of-life option available.

The removal of PE from all Maltesers boxes in the UK means that the box itself will be fully recyclable – the plastic film that covers the box, which is essential to protect the quality of the product within, isn’t currently widely recyclable.

The renowned Maltesers box, as we know it today, was launched nearly 90-years ago in 1930 and today, Britons eat over 180 million Maltesers treats annually – most of which are made at Mars Wrigley’s HQ in Slough.
