Drinks firms spooked as Indian govt refuses to exempt some plastic straws from ban

India has rejected demands from large global and domestic beverage firms to exempt some plastic straws from a ban that takes effect on July 1, fanning fears of disruption in a multi-billion-dollar industry.

The ban on items such as straws packaged with small packs of juices and dairy products that earn $790 million in annual sales is part of India’s drive to stamp out polluting, single-use plastic trash that chokes rivers and drains.

Connecticut and Vermont Ban PFAS in Food Packaging

Connecticut’s ban of PFAS in food packaging was originally included in Bill No. 926. That bill was combined with S.B.837, which restricts PFAS chemicals in firefighting foam and the combined bill.  Substitute for Raised S.B. No.837, was passed by the Connecticut House on June 7 and by the Senate on June 9. The bill became law, Public Act No. 21-191, on June 28 when the governor did not veto the bill within 15 days after adjournment of the legislative session.

Maldives govt publicises list of banned single-use plastics, packaging

According to the circular (8/2020), the ban comes into effect on June 1, 2021, and will apply to all products classified under the following 12 categories:

1. Plastic drinking straw

2. Single-use plastic-based plates, cutleries and stirrers

3. Styrofoam lunch box

4. Plastic shopping bags below 30x30 cm (including oxo-degradable and synthetic polymer-based biodegradable plastics)

5. Plastic shopping bags below 50=micron thickness (including oxo-degradable and synthetic polymer-based biodegradable plastics)
