The sole company authorised to collect and recover packaging waste in Czechia may have a conflict of interest in its dual role as a waste collector with powers of authorisation over competitors in breach of EU competition rules, the European Commission has warned Prague, according to a statement published today (June 11).

EKO-KOM is the only company operating in the country offering collection and recovery services for packaging waste to over 20,000 business for more than two decades.

The petitioner, South Indian Sugar Mills Association, Karnataka, challenged the notification from the Union of India that mandates 20 percent of sugar production be packaged in jute bags from raw jute produced in India, effective until September 30, 2024. Uday Holla, the Senior Counsel representing the petitioner, argued that the Standing Advisory Committee, during its meeting on July 21, 2022, had exempted the packaging of sugar in jute bags. He further contended that the Industrial Toxicology Research Centre has found jute batching oil to be tumorigenic.

In a Wednesday filing in Fort Lauderdale, Florida federal court, Hershey said no reasonable consumer could believe its Halloween- and Christmas-themed candies necessarily contained the "explicit carved out artistic designs" shown on packaging.
The consumers suing Hershey expressed disappointment with the lack of details on nine Reese's products, including pumpkin-shaped candies missing eyes and crooked mouths, and a football-shaped candy whose lack of stitching left it resembling an egg.
