At the Sustainable Cosmetics Summit 2023 industry event in Paris this week, Weleda received a double award: as a “Sustainability Pioneer” for the new Weleda Logistics Campus, which impressively shows how the circular economy works. Weleda also achieved first place in the “New Sustainable Product” category for the Skin Food Nourishing Cleansing Balm in a tube made from 100% recycled aluminum made by Linhardt . The brand is once again proving that it knows how to combine beauty and sustainability.

For the sixth time since 2013, Weleda has won Ecovia's Sustainable Beauty Award 2023 in two categories. With the Sustainable Beauty Awards, the jury honors companies that play a pioneering role in sustainable business in the beauty industry, for example through new production methods, innovative raw materials or a new approach to social aspects. Weleda impressed the jury with two outstanding innovations that exemplify the company's contribution to closed raw material cycles and thus to optimal use of resources and climate protection.

The Weleda logistics campus: This is how sustainable construction works
In the “Sustainable Pioneer” category, Weleda achieved first place for the new construction of its logistics campus at the German location in Schwäbisch Gmünd. In economic, ecological and social terms, it sets new standards for the transformation of the economy towards sustainable, circular action. For Weleda, the entire life cycle of the buildings and their environmental footprint were crucial from the outset: from construction through operation to future dismantling, the logistics campus meets the highest standards of sustainability and circularity. Climate protection is a key aspect: for smooth operation in terms of heating and cooling, the logistics campus requires around 800 MWh per year. By using renewable energies to cover all needs through geothermal energy and photovoltaics, over 200 tons of carbon dioxide can be saved every year. Particularly ingenious: To ensure that the 10,000 photovoltaic modules on the roofs and facades provide optimal performance, Weleda arranged the three buildings in such a way that they make the best possible use of the position of the sun.

The shelves for the 17,000 pallets also represent a highly innovative solution for a high-bay warehouse: They are made entirely of wood and therefore bind over 1,000 tons of CO2. They are surrounded by walls made of rammed earth, for which part of the excavation from the excavation pit was used - this not only made it possible to avoid the energy-intensive removal of the earth, but also to build a structure that even meets the strict requirements for storing medicines without it has to be artificially air-conditioned.
