The new V-OVS next closure system is set to incorporate ‘several unique technical advances’ with customer feedback and shifting market needs in mind. Like its predecessors, it is designed to secure and protect the integrity of injectable products; yet it will also allow consumers to integrate ‘gold-standard’ Luer Lock features with ‘even easier’ handling characteristics and an ‘even more intuitive’ opening mechanism.

Its overall size has been reduced to encompass smaller syringes. It also aims to optimize user control during opening with new gripping surfaces, while a ‘robust’ locking mechanism is expected to hold the closure in place ‘even during the most challenging clinical use cases’.

“With its proprietary tamper-evident features, we’re confident that V-OVS next will bring a new level of user-friendliness to Luer Lock applications,” says Tobias Nemeth, director of Primary Packaging Service & Projects at Vetter. “It will further build on the decades of market impact delivered by this industry-leading system, and provide a differentiating choice for customers with an even wider range of injectable products.”

V-OVS next is still in development. Vetter’s go-to-market preparations include a recently-completed human factors study with a representative group of frontline clinical users, said to have resulted in ‘consistent positive feedback and insights’ to be used in finalizing the system’s design and advancing its commercialization.

The closure system is anticipated for a 2027 launch, at which point Vetter will offer both V-OVS and V-OVS next in hopes of giving customers options for their syringe-based products.

All the way back in January 2023, Schreiner MediPharm presented its own solution for prefilled syringes. Needle-Trap is a label with integrated needle protection and a special seal to signal if a prefilled syringe has been opened before, intending to protect the product’s integrity until its final use.

More recently, Berry unveiled various closures and couplings for its Politainer combi pack; these are intended to unlock a closed system to safely dispense sensitive liquids, including pharmaceuticals, without bringing them into contact with air. Each closure comes with tamper-evident features.
