Turning Apple Waste into Compostable Packaging Material

As everybody knows Molded Pulp packaging created its value that it will compostable and recyclables by nature but by declining the supply of Recycled Newspapers scientists started looking for New Alternative for Molded Pulp. Professors of Oregon State University Dr. Yanyun Zhao studied for alternative sources for Molded Pulp Packaging along with their researchers, found that Apple Pomace and other fruits and vegetable byproduct after taking juice out of it are a viable environmental friendly options.

At present they are focussing on Apple Pomace because there is huge abundant availability of Apple Pomace in Pacific Northwest, where 70-75% apple ar used to make Apple Juice and their 25-30% leftover can be used in Upcycling in making of Molded Pulp Packaging.

A key challenge in turning Apple Pomace into Paper-based Packaging is to make the Material water-resistant to withstand the high moisture liquid food or nonfood product stored under high humidity conditions.

Zhao's team found that chitosan furtherly reduced the water absorption of the Carbon NanoFiberCNF film whereas lignin presented in the material will provide the natural structural support. Glycerol which is an organic compound is added further to make the material flexible and soft, previous studies show that low levels glycerol usually reduced water absorption.

Zhao's team also developed the superhydrophobic coating to the Apple Pomace to further enhance water resistance.

Researchers also determined that the optimal amount of Polymer and compound along with some cardboard fibers also be helpful for the stability of Molded Pulp Packaging products.

Researchers also tested the compostability of the new Pulp based Packaging Material and found that its compostable in soil, which means its an eco-friendly packaging option.

The study had brought insights into using  Pomace as the alternative fiber to make Water-resistant and Compostable Packaging Solutions.
