tetra pak launches plantbased, fully renewable carton

tetra pak has launched the first carton made entirely from plantbased, renewable packaging materialsthe global food processing and packaging company said the new tetra rex carton will be the first in the market to have biobased lowdensity polyethylene ldpe films and biobased highdensity polyethylene hdpe caps, both derived from sugar cane, in addition to forest stewardship council fsc certified paperboard, making the whole product fully renewable for the first time.charles brand, vp marketing &amp product management at tetra pak, said environment credentials were one of the company&rsquos strategic priorities and a driver of its product development activities.&ldquotogether with suppliers, customers and other stakeholders, we are leading the industry towards 100 renewable packaging. we believe that increasing the renewable content of our packages is not only good for the environment, but also offers our customers a competitive advantage in the overall environmental profile of their products.&rdquochristina chester, product director carton gable top, tetra pak, told packaging news the tetra rex carton was suitable for almost any chilled fresh liquid drink or food.&ldquoinitially the package we are launching now is primarily intended for milk, and is available both in duplex and triplex board. we plan to expand biobased packaging within the tetra pak portfolio subject to customer demand,&rdquo she said.chester said the carton has been in the development process for a couple of years. developed in partnership with braskem, a biopolymers producer, the new tetra rex package will be commercially available in early 2015.&ldquowe&rsquove enjoyed a long partnership with braskem, and their partnership and expertise has supported us with a range of initiatives in this area such as biobased caps and coatings across the portfolio, so the work on tetra rex was a productive extension,&rdquo added chester&nbsp
