Tesco Redefines Pasta Shopping with Eco-Friendly Packaging Revolution

Shoppers strolling through Tesco’s pasta aisle will spot a significant change this week, as the supermarket giant takes another leap forward in its sustainability journey. Tesco has swapped the plastic packaging of its Finest range of dried pasta for fully recyclable paper packs, slashing over 10 million pieces of plastic annually — that’s more than 30 tonnes of waste removed from the planet.

The switch covers 10 popular pasta varieties, from Rigatoni to Spaghetti Bucatini, now wrapped in eco-friendly paper packaging that fits seamlessly into household recycling bins. Tesco Express stores will also carry the newly packaged pasta, making it easier than ever for customers to make eco-conscious choices.

Claire Lorains, Tesco Group Sustainability and Quality Director, highlighted the milestone:
“Removing unnecessary plastic is an important way that Tesco can reduce its environmental impact. The new paper packaging works just as well as the old plastic but can be popped into your normal recycling bin with other paper.

"We're proud of the work we’ve done so far to reduce the plastic we use at Tesco but will continue to look for ways to do more."

A Bold Step in Tesco’s 4Rs Strategy

The move aligns with Tesco’s 4Rs (Remove, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) packaging strategy, launched in 2019. Since its inception, the retailer has eliminated more than 2.3 billion pieces of plastic from its UK operations, setting a benchmark for the industry.

Some of Tesco’s other recent packaging innovations include:

  • Scrapping plastic for pocket tissues: Tesco replaced the plastic wrapping on its own-brand pocket tissue multi-packs with recyclable paper, cutting out over 55 million pieces of soft plastic annually.
  • Launching sustainable toilet rolls and kitchen towels: These luxury products are made from recycled cardboard sourced from delivery boxes, toilet roll tubes, and corrugated waste. This innovation uses less water, chemicals, and energy than traditional methods.

Pasta with a Purpose

The Finest range now sporting paper packaging includes classics like Fusilli, Penne Rigate, and Orecchiette, ensuring that pasta lovers can enjoy their favorite dishes with a side of environmental consciousness.

Tesco’s sustainability efforts showcase a commitment to tackling plastic waste while offering customers greener options. With this latest initiative, the supermarket is proving that even small steps — like changing pasta packaging — can make a big difference in the fight against plastic pollution.
