kensey boyd wanted to transport the plush cupcakes from the chocolate moose. however, no readily available packaging was capable to withstand the dropping, joggling, and shaking that goes along with overnight delivery. then for help, she came to her alma mater, clemson university. in 2004, boyd graduated with a degree in packaging science. however, boyd had never worked in the field actually. while working in charleston, she fell into the business of cupcake, and now, at the main street store, she&rsquos on the post of the general manager. bob kimmel is a director and associate professor at clemson&rsquos center for flexible packaging. bob mentions that clemson conducts one of five programs in the nation offering degrees, in bachelor of science in packaging science. fourthyear students take an assignment that allows them to come up with a solution for packaging problems for various companies. kimmel says, in the 10 years, when he&rsquos led the program, students have worked on around 100 projects. he says that they look for the assignments that are tough enough to challenge the expertise and abilities of the students. he further mentioned that, as consumers, no one thinks about any of such problems, such as how to protect the product from the abuse they get in shipping. for this cupcakeshipping project, first students tried to put in a lollipop stick in the middle of the cupcake. however, this solution failed. then they came up with the concept of using inverted solo cups which attach to holes in a liner that is inserted in the box. to bear any weight that may be placed on top, cardboard separations were also added. two students transported cupcakes to their parents, one in charleston, the other in upstate new york. this solution was a big success. boyd mentioned that the design needs some modifications and could start shipping as early as midmarch. she said that they had to get through the valentine&rsquos day first. source of information httpwww.greenvilleonline.comarticle20130228ent303010096chocolatemooseenlist…
