rotarians show festive spirit packing up food for needy families

rotary club of camberley making christmas food parcels for the needy in the area at f. stokes &amp sons ltd, doman rd, camberley.the rotary club of camberley has held its annual food drive &ndash now in its 35th year &ndash packing christmas food parcels to be distributed to those less fortunate.the christmas parcel packing session was attended by 10 rotarians, the mayor of surrey heath cllr bob paton and wanda elmesmudi from access storage, who provided the packaging.nearly 100 parcels were made up and distributed.the parcels are given to charities and people in the area who are less privileged. they contained foodstuffs ranging from chocolates and christmas puddings to jars of jam and packets of tea.derek kearnes, 70, from camberley, organiser of the christmas hamper scheme, said &ldquowe ended up doing 94 parcel food hampers, which was a very similar quantity to last year.&rdquothe last few parcels were delivered this week and the trussell trust, which coordinates a nationwide network of foodbanks, provided the rotary club with other foodstuffs to pack in the hampers.the trust collects items from supermarkets and church collections, as well as public donations.access storage, in camberley, also helped the cause by donating 100 boxes to pack the food into.jason morgan, customer sales advisor, said &ldquowe help out with the christmas events where we can and wanda loves being involved in the local community.&rdquothe camberley rotarians collect products throughout the year that are then packed up for christmas and delivered to individuals and families who are in need.derek dearmer, public relations officer, said &ldquonearly 100 parcels were made up and distributed to needy residents of all ages in surrey heath. camberley rotary club has been providing and distributing christmas parcels for many, many years and the provision of parcels becomes more necessary as time goes on.&ldquoonce the stuff is all packed it has to be delivered to local homes.&ldquothe parcels are not just for people living on their own, it&rsquos for young people with large families who may have as many as five children.&ldquothere are huge foodbank organisations who run the foodbank every week, but we just do it at christmas.&ldquoif we were a much bigger club we would do this much more often.&rdquopresident of the rotary club of camberley, chrissie lawson, met and greeted the mayor and the pair helped to pack some parcels.cllr paton said &ldquoi think the rotary club is doing a really good thing.&ldquoit was an interesting visit, seeing how they come together with people such as those representing churches and other areas of the community.&ldquoit&rsquos fantastic that they&rsquove shown such christmas spirit once again to organise and make up the food parcels.&rdquo&nbsp
