Amcor and Power Roll Partner to Revolutionize Solar Energy with Lightweight Photovoltaic Film

Zurich – In a groundbreaking move poised to redefine the solar energy industry, global packaging leader Amcor has joined forces with UK-based tech pioneers Power Roll Limited. The collaboration, marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), aims to deliver an innovative lightweight solar photovoltaic (PV) film that promises a cost-effective and flexible alternative to traditional silicon solar panels.

A Lighter, Smarter Solar Solution

Power Roll's cutting-edge solar film presents a sustainable and versatile solution, designed for applications ranging from fragile rooftops and building facades to off-grid systems and transportation. Unlike conventional solar panels, this technology does not rely on rare earth materials and can be manufactured using cost-efficient roll-to-roll processes, making it a game-changer for the solar market.

“With one in three commercial rooftops globally unable to support the weight of traditional solar panels, Power Roll's flexible film unlocks a world of possibilities,” explained Neil Spann, CEO of Power Roll. “This includes 12 billion square meters of untapped rooftop potential, enabling a global solar revolution starting right here in County Durham, UK.”

Sustainability Meets Scalability

Amcor, renowned for its expertise in barrier technologies and roll-to-roll manufacturing, sees this partnership as a natural extension of its commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Frank Lehmann, Amcor's Vice President of Corporate Venturing and Open Innovation, expressed confidence in the collaboration:
“The solar film technology developed by Power Roll has the potential to democratize solar energy access, delivering ultra-low-cost electricity while supporting the global transition to net-zero emissions.”

With solar power projected to become the world’s largest energy source by 2050, accounting for 40% of global electricity needs, the lightweight solar PV film aligns perfectly with the demand for sustainable and scalable energy solutions.

Powering the Future of Energy

Power Roll's microgroove film technology is poised to disrupt the solar market, offering a lightweight and flexible option that outperforms traditional panels in specific applications. This includes rooftops with low-load capacity, portable solar setups, and integration into transport and off-grid projects.

The potential market is immense, with flexible PV technology estimated to unlock a £250 billion opportunity for commercial and industrial rooftops alone. Power Roll has already demonstrated its technology's viability, with 24 patent families covering over 120 individual patents, and has established partnerships with blue-chip manufacturers and suppliers.

A Shared Vision

The partnership underscores Amcor's strategic focus on fostering innovation. Through initiatives like Amcor Lift-Off, the company actively invests in start-ups developing sustainable technologies. This collaboration with Power Roll is one of several strategic moves by Amcor, which has also partnered with other pioneering companies, including PragmatIC Semiconductors and Pulpac, to drive sustainable advancements.

As discussions progress on the final terms of Power Roll's funding round, the two companies are poised to deliver on their shared vision of accessible, affordable, and sustainable solar energy.

With the solar revolution gaining momentum, Amcor and Power Roll are not just participants—they're setting the pace for a cleaner, greener future.
