an examination has started into the supply chain of uk glass packaging to gain a deeper insight into the potential results of introducing targets for split recycling for this material stream. valpak, which is supported by wrap, along with other key stakeholders including the environment agency and defra will provide support into the project. if split targets are introduced, with the intention of achieving compliance for 2013, at least 63 of glass packaging recycling must come from remelt. although in 2012, fulfilment for glass targets was achieved, the extra carryover of prnpern evidence for 2013 was lessened to 16,700 tonnes in comparison to the 57,000 tonnes carried over for 2012, which potentially makes reaching fulfilment this year more difficult. in this analysis, a related issue for glass to remelt to be considered is the worth of the glass accumulated for recycling. this influences the financial aspects of using glass cullet as an alternative for virgin materials from the point of view of glass container manufacturers. the existing status of the market of glass will be measured in terms of the tonnages coming into the market with estimates split by format and by colour, building a general picture for the uk, and separately for wales and for scotland. to gain more understanding of the possible evolution of glass packaging prnperns in terms of prices and tonnages, the project will also look back at events happened in the glass market. commenting on the program, marcus gover, who is the wrap&39s director of closed loop economy, mentioned that this project will offer authoritative and unbiased analysis of the market of glass to improve market information and transparency. marcus gover further said that it will inform debate in the industry and create harmony about particular actions that the field, together with wrap and others, could potentially deliver to allow more glass packaging recycling and recovery in the uk. source of information httpwww.edie.netnews5scrutinyappliedtoglasspackagingaheadofrecyclingtargetp…
