Winfried Muehling, marketing & communications director at Pro Carton, said: “Cartonboard packaging, derived from biotic wood fibres, embodies a renewable resource that aids in reducing reliance on fossil fuels. “The forest based industry, which absorb approximately 20% of EU greenhouse gases, are integral to combating climate change.

“Trees mitigate carbon dioxide levels, reduce the greenhouse effect, and serve as natural air filters, playing a critical role in sustaining life and enhancing environmental health.

“As an industry, we share a collective responsibility to contribute positively to the planet’s future. At Pro Carton, we are proud to support sustainable forestry efforts that ensure the preservation of forests for future generations.

“Sustainably managed forests not only combat climate change, but also provide essential jobs, income, and renewable raw materials for industries and energy. Our industry stands for European jobs and value creation.”

Muehling said the European forests supporting the paper and board industry are a testament to this commitment. These forests are not only sustainable but grow by an area equivalent to 1,500 football pitches each day. Furthermore, the wood fibres used in our packaging materials can be recycled over 25 times, underscoring the regenerative potential of trees within a circular economy.

“National Tree Week serves as a vital reminder of the importance of trees in improving environmental health and securing a better future climate,” he added. “By raising awareness, we aim to reinforce the importance of sourcing renewable materials from sustainably managed forests and prioritising responsible practices in the supply chain.”
