"Kellanova Europe Achieves a Milestone in Sustainable Snacking: Unveils Redesigned, Widely Recyclable Pringles Tube with Paper Fiber Bottom

In a historic move for the snacking industry, Kellanova Europe, in collaboration with Sonoco, has transformed the iconic Pringles tube into a sustainable packaging marvel. The Belgian engineering and R&D teams proudly launched the 'designed for recycling' Pringles tube earlier this year, marking a significant shift toward eco-friendly practices.

The innovative redesign replaces the traditional metal bottom with a paper fiber-based alternative, contributing to the worldwide mission of sustainable consumption. Specially designed machines, operational in Mechelen, Belgium, are set to produce over 1 billion perfectly sealed recyclable Pringles tubes annually across all production lines.

Retaining the beloved cylindrical shape, synonymous with Pringles, the new tube ensures the iconic stacked crisps remain intact, adding an element of fun for consumers. The paper-based design not only preserves the chips' flavor but also allows for easy reclosure with a recyclable plastic lid.

Crucially, the new tube adheres to "Circularity by Design" guidelines from the European fiber-based packaging value chain and the 4Evergreen alliance. It receives a high recyclability score under 4evergreen’s Recyclability Evaluation Protocol, making it suitable for recycling in standard paper mills. Accepted in recycling streams across Europe, the paper end enhances recyclability for paper processors.

Most of the paper used in both the old and new tubes is crafted from recycled material, aligning with Kellanova's commitment to boost the circular economy for recycled paper packaging. This sustainable initiative follows Kellanova's trials of a steel can in Italy in 2019 and a paper tube in the UK in 2020.

Beyond environmental benefits, the recyclable Pringles tube represents a crucial step in Kellanova's pledge to make all its packaging recyclable, reusable, and compostable by 2030. The launch not only sets an example for the food packaging industry but also strengthens brand loyalty, showcasing Kellanova's dedication to a greener, more sustainable future."
