Pet foods under the SELECT GOLD range will now be packaged in FlexiBag Recyclable, BarrierPack Recyclable and Recyclable StandUp Pouches mono-material solutions by Mondi.

“Consumers across the globe are calling on companies to contribute to a circular economy, and rightly so,” said Fitore Loshaj, regional sales for Mondi’s Consumer Flexibles division in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. “Our team worked closely with Fressnapf | Maxi Zoo to design a packaging solution for its dry pet food range, that is recyclable, fit-for-purpose and visually appealing — protecting the product while being easy to use.”

According to Mondi, the three sustainable packaging solutions offer design flexibility and ease of use for consumers. The solutions also present strong barrier capabilities to protect pet food products through storage, transportation and retail and ensure a long shelf life. The mono-material packaging can be recycled with other mono-polyethylene films through several recycling streams in Europe.

As part of the partnership, and to highlight the design flexibility of Mondi’s recyclable solutions, Fressnapf | Maxi Zoo designed approximately 150 different pet food packages, ranging from 300 g to 12 kg, using these solutions.

The franchise benefited from an expanded range of colors and new screening technology from U.Günther to ensure graphics and text are sharp. This process color printing tech uses less ink, removes the risk of chemicals from plate production, and offers a faster and more efficient transition between designs, according to Mondi.

“Collaborating with Mondi made this a truly enjoyable process,” said Yannick Christiaens, senior expert lead of product development and sourcing for dry food at Fressnapf. “Our two and four-legged customers trust us, they know we love pets and that we are committed to creating a better world for all of us. This is part of that — our 150 different pack designs are part of our sustainability journey and there will be more to come, all of which will lead to fulfill our vision ‘Happier pets. Happier people.’”
