UK-based technology retailer Dixons Carphone has introduced a scheme allowing customers to recycle expanded polystyrene (EPS) packaging at Currys PC World stores.

The launch follows a successful recent pilot programme conducted at 14 stores for six weeks.

Customers can initially drop off only EPS associated with TV packaging, but Dixons Carphone will aim to make other types of packaging available to collect depending on consumer demand and uptake rate.

The recycling scheme complements Currys PC World’s ongoing home delivery recycling service, which allows customers to return their packaging to delivery drivers.

Currys PC World currently recycles more than a tenth of all consumer product packing polystyrene in the UK. The company also works with De Vries and DHLe to turn compacted EPS into insulation panels for housing.

Dixons Carphone sustainability and environmental, social and governance (ESG) group director Moira Thomas said: “We recognise the pressing need to improve our use of resources.

“We are a leader in extending the life of technology through repair, recycling and reuse and we offer customers products that help them save energy, reduce waste and save water.

“This EPS recycling scheme and our intention to make 100% of our own label plastic packaging reusable or recyclable by 2023 is a great example of the innovative work we do to reduce our impact on the environment.
