Australian packaging solutions provider Detpak has unveiled its new Vanguard range, which includes compostable sugarcane plates, bowls and containers with no-added PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances).

The Vanguard range, developed by US-based Eco-Products, is a recyclable packaging line made from renewable moulded sugarcane fibre. It is currently available across the market throughout Australia.

According to Detpak, the new packaging range achieves grease resistance through a proprietary formulation without adding PFAS.

Detpak product and brand general manager Keith Bishop said: “While understanding the human health effects of long-term, low-level PFAS exposure is still developing, there is global concern about the persistence and toxicity of these chemicals in the environment.

“We are working with our customer base on phasing out PFAS from their products and materials, and the introduction of the Vanguard range is a key milestone of our strategy in phasing out added PFAS from our entire product range.”

The packaging solutions provider has now become the first in the Australian market with this broad range of No-Added PFAS food packaging.

Detpak will also be the exclusive retailer of the Vanguard range in Australia.

The company plans to remove more PFAS from its materials and products. It aligns with growing knowledge about the negative effects of PFAS exposure on human health.

It also demonstrates the Australian firm’s commitment to sustainability. Detpak aims to offer innovative and sustainable packaging for the future.

Additionally, the move is in line with Detpak’s global sustainability goals, which include raising the proportion of goods that either meet or surpass the Sustainable Packaging Guidelines of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO).

APCO CEO Chris Foley said: “As Australia’s co-regulator for packaging, APCO has been working closely with our members, including Detpak, to identify the presence of PFAS in packaging in Australia and, where it is identified, phase it out.

“The support of APCO’s industry members, including Detpak, is crucial to the success of this work, and to the goal of eliminating PFAS in packaging in Australia.”
