Capri Sun transitions to recyclable pouches

Made entirely of recyclable plastic (mono-material polypropylene: PP) instead of its former non-recyclable pouch made from laminated layers of aluminium, PE and PET, the pouch has a lower carbon footprint than any other common beverage packaging.

Compared to its current pouch, which already weighs only a fifth of any comparable PET bottle, Capri Sun said it will reduce CO2 emissions by a further 25 per cent.

The innovation is part of Capri Sun’s ambition to transition its entire drinks range to fully recyclable packaging.

In recent years, the brand has transitioned from plastic to paper straws, going beyond its existing use of FSC-certified cardboard packaging for its multipacks, and the introduction of 100% rPET (recycled PET) across its bottled squash range, as well as a commitment to become carbon neutral in its manufacturing operations.

Roland Weening, chief executive, Capri Sun Group, said: “Our new recyclable pouches will offer consumers the same convenience they know and love, but with a significantly lower CO2 footprint than any other common beverage packaging.”

“It forms part of our broader commitment to reducing our impact on the environment. We will continue to push our waste and energy reduction program, and we continue to wholeheartedly support the implementation of a circular economy across the whole of our industry.”

The 200ml single serve pouches, in two of its much-loved flavours Orange and Blackcurrant & Apple, will be the first of the Capri-Sun range to transition to the mono-material polypropylene packaging in the UK.

The brand will also introduce its 330ml range in recyclable pouches with a re-closable, tethered cap, which it says saves 14% on packaging compared to the previous cap.
