Borealis Unveils High-Performance rLLDPE with 85% PCR Content for Sustainable Flexible Packaging

Borealis is making bold strides in advancing the circular economy with the introduction of Borcycle™ M CWT120CL, a cutting-edge recycled linear low density polyethylene (rLLDPE) grade, purpose-built for non-food flexible packaging applications. Containing an impressive 85% post-consumer recyclate (PCR), this new grade is a significant leap forward in Borealis’ efforts to accelerate sustainable solutions in packaging.

Developed in collaboration with Ecoplast, a member of the Borealis Group, Borcycle™ M CWT120CL is engineered for demanding blown film applications in primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging. From stretch film and stretch hood to agricultural, industrial, and protective films, this material offers manufacturers a sustainable option without compromising on performance.

“Achieving an rLLDPE grade with 85% PCR content while delivering the mechanical strength and versatility needed for high-end flexible packaging is a real technical milestone,” says Peter Voortmans, Commercial Director Consumer Products Flexibles at Borealis. “With this new grade, we’re giving packaging producers a powerful tool to meet their sustainability goals and align with the upcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).”

Borcycle™ M CWT120CL stands out for its exceptional toughness-stiffness balance, high stretchability, and low gel content—qualities that are crucial for modern, high-speed production lines. The material’s development marks the culmination of over two years of intensive work by Borealis and Ecoplast teams to overcome the complexities associated with high PCR integration.

Produced using Borealis’ proprietary Borcycle™ M mechanical recycling technology, this rLLDPE grade not only lowers the carbon footprint of packaging solutions but also aligns with the company’s EverMinds™ mission to close the loop on plastic waste.

With the official launch set for January 2025, Borealis continues to demonstrate its leadership in sustainable material innovation, helping to redefine packaging essentials for a circular and climate-conscious future.
