Swedish packaging materials innovator Billerud has officially launched ConFlex HeatSeal, a next-generation, heat-sealable paper that replaces plastic in a wide range of packaging applications.

Designed with sustainability and performance in mind, ConFlex HeatSeal aligns with converters’ and brand owners’ growing demand for renewable, recyclable alternatives to fossil-based materials.

Already deployed in the bedding segment by a major Swedish furniture brand—widely understood to be IKEA—the ConFlex HeatSeal paper has demonstrated its effectiveness as a commercially viable replacement for plastic.

Its potential applications extend well beyond home furnishings and into industrial and hygiene packaging sectors, where demand for durable, sealable, and recyclable materials is growing rapidly.

“With ConFlex HeatSeal, we offer a commercially viable, heat-sealable paper that supports businesses in transitioning away from plastic,” said Robert Torstensson, Vice President of Business Area Paper at Billerud.

“It delivers strong sealing performance and recyclability within existing paper recovery systems and works within slightly modified converting processes where Billerud provides transition support.

“It’s great to see how we live our purpose—to make high-performance packaging materials for a low-carbon society—through innovation.”

Recent product expansion and market positioning

The launch of ConFlex HeatSeal follows Billerud’s broader strategy to pioneer fossil-free packaging innovations.

In early 2025, the company also unveiled ConFlex Silk, a lightweight, silky-touch paper designed for personal care and hygiene products. It combines tactile softness with strong sealability and printability.

Meanwhile, ConFlex Barrier, another recent release, introduces natural barrier properties for dry food and pharmaceutical applications, providing grease and moisture resistance without plastic coatings.

Together, these product lines form a powerful toolkit for brand owners seeking to improve packaging sustainability without sacrificing functionality or production efficiency.

One of ConFlex HeatSeal’s key advantages is its compatibility with existing converting equipment. This allows manufacturers to maintain production speeds while reducing their carbon footprint.

The material’s recyclability within established paper recovery streams further supports circular economy goals.

As industries move to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations and consumer expectations, Billerud’s innovations, including ConFlex HeatSeal, are positioning the company at the forefront of the transition toward paper-based, low-carbon packaging solutions.
