Berry Global and Green Oil Team Up for 100% Recycled Plastic Lubricant Bottle

A pioneering bottle and closure solution from Berry Global, made entirely from post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic, is helping Green Oil drive its mission to “lubricate the world without polluting it.”

Green Oil, known for its eco-friendly lubricants, offers an alternative to traditional petrochemical-based products. The company’s plant-based formulas are fully biodegradable and free from polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a non-biodegradable chemical often found in lubricants.

To align its packaging with its sustainability ethos, Green Oil sought a 100% PCR plastic bottle for its Gardinól lubricant range, designed for household, garden, DIY, and workshop applications. After trials with another supplier fell short, Green Oil partnered with Berry, which successfully provided a tailored bottle solution with the necessary specifications—including an optimized orifice size for precise lubricant application.

While the bottle itself was made from 100% PCR plastic from the outset, the polypropylene (PP) closure and applicator nozzle presented a greater challenge due to limited availability of PCR PP. This was resolved with Berry’s proprietary CleanStream™ recycled plastic, making it possible to produce the closure entirely from recycled material as well.

Crucially, the closure is also designed with recyclability in mind. Unlike conventional carbon-black plastic, which often escapes detection in waste sorting facilities, Berry’s closures use a non-carbon black masterbatch, ensuring they can be identified by Near Infra-Red (NIR) scanners and properly recycled.

“With Green Oil products, we aim to support a cleaner, healthier planet—from soil to rivers to people—so it’s vital that our packaging has minimal environmental impact,” said Simon Nash, founder of Green Oil. “Thanks to Berry, our bottles and closures are not only made from recycled plastic but can also be recycled again.”

Further reinforcing its environmental commitment, Green Oil’s new bottles now incorporate Prevented Ocean Plastics (POP)—plastic waste intercepted before reaching the ocean and repurposed into high-quality recycled material.

"As well as their sustainability credentials, the bottle and closure are practical and user-friendly," Nash added. "Our partnership with Berry has been great for the environment—and great for business."
