Amcor, a global leader in responsible packaging solutions, has unveiled its Decarbonization Roadmap aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The company's targets, validated by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), are in line with the latest climate science to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Amcor’s Decarbonization Roadmap is centered around "4 + 1" key areas:
- Product Redesign: Innovating product designs to minimize carbon footprints.
- Recycled Content: Increasing the use of recycled materials in packaging solutions.
- Renewable Electricity: Transitioning to renewable energy sources for operations.
- Supply Chain Collaboration: Working closely with suppliers to meet high sustainability standards and align with Amcor's decarbonization goals.
- Operational Efficiency: Improving water and waste management, enhancing energy efficiency, and upgrading equipment to boost operational efficiency.
Peter Konieczny, Amcor's Interim Chief Executive Officer, emphasized that sustainability is a core motivation at Amcor, aiming for positive environmental impact through leadership and products. The Decarbonization Roadmap is designed to accelerate and sustain progress in reducing carbon footprints.
Since 2008, Amcor has been monitoring and reporting on its environmental impact. In fiscal year 2023 (FY23), 22 Amcor sites achieved 100% renewable electricity use, resulting in a 10.2% reduction in absolute GHG emissions compared to FY22. Additionally, the company increased its renewable electricity use by 244% compared to FY22.
