udget supermarket chain Aldi has partnered with sustainable packaging company Frugalpac to introduce what is claimed to be the UK’s first supermarket own-brand paper wine bottles.

The retailer will offer its Cambalala South African Shiraz (£7.99/$10.19, 75cl) and Cambalala South African Sauvignon Blanc (£7.99, 75cl) in Frugalpac’s lightweight paper bottles.

The new bottles leverage Frugalpac’s ‘Frugal Bottles’, which are made from 94% recycled paperboard and a food-grade pouch.

The bottles are fully recyclable and five times lighter when compared with traditional glass wine bottles.

This transition is estimated to reduce Aldi’s carbon footprint substantially, equivalent to circumnavigating the globe 5.8 times, according to the retailer.

In addition to their environmental benefits, the paper bottles are durable and easy to carry.

Aldi UK Buying managing director Julie Ashfield said: “Shoppers are striving to become more sustainable in their everyday lives, looking for small ways to make a big difference for our planet.

“Our Buying Teams are continuously thinking of how we can evolve our ranges to offer greater value and greener choices. We are proud to be the first supermarket to launch an own-brand paper bottle, helping to drive sustainable change.”

Aldi’s new Cambalala South African Shiraz and Cambalala South African Sauvignon Blanc will be available in its stores from 18 March 2024, which also marks Global Recycling Day.

Frugalpac CEO Malcolm Waugh said: “Our ambition has always been to allow more people the opportunity to enjoy our paper Frugal Bottles, giving them greener choices.

“Launching in a major UK supermarket means more shoppers can now drink responsibly and sustainably and we are so pleased to be part of that journey.”

Earlier this month, Aldi introduced a new tracking system offering transparency of its recycling process of flexible plastic packaging collected from customers.
